Hello folks! I want to let you know that I finally decided to post two short stories that I wrote for my reading at Casa Libre (a wicked cool non-profit writing collaboration). I was originally going to call the collection “Disco Lemonade” not realizing that it was highly popular. I thought it was just a random lyric in Mercy Playground’s “Sex and Candy”, but apparently it’s a thing. So of course the WordPress url was taken, along with ‘Lemonadedisco’. I created ‘discolemons’, but it felt wrong. I didn’t want to call it something that’s really popular. I’ve always had the term ‘tequila brunch’ in my head. I knew that I wanted to call something Tequila Brunch but didn’t know what. So when Disco Lemonade wasn’t available, I decided on Tequila Brunch. I don’t even remember where I got it from, but it sounds hella cool! Am I right?
The short stories take place in my home town of Tucson, so Tucsonans will be able to identify with the locations I write about. I like to think of Tucson as the Land of Not Quite Right, though my father would argue that it’s the entire state of California. It could be argued that Florida is also the Land of Not Quite Right. Most of these stories will have a supernatural twist to them, exposing the seedy underbelly of Tucson and its glorious weirdness. I hope that you will enjoy them.
I am proud to announce that I have finished writing the 26th episode of ‘Spell’ completing Season 1 or something! I’m pretty stoked about it! I’ll start brainstorming ideas for the second season soon. It’s got to be bigger and better, gotta step up my game! The first season is admittedly side quests; the second season should be more plot based. I’ll finally have an idea of what everything does and character motivations. I look forward to seeing your responses to the next 12 episodes.
Thank you for reading ‘Spell’. I enjoy all of your feedback!
Well, I didn’t set a high goal for myself this month. I figured that I would be lucky enough to get six episodes of Spell done this month. As of an hour ago, I have just completed the sixth episode of the month. I’ve been writing fearlessly since August 8th. I was stuck for a couple of days, but I found just sitting down and writing something until it makes sense has really helped me out. It feels like the beginning of every episode is like back at Square One. Each episode is an experience of starting over from scratch. This is the first project where I’ve felt that way. It takes a lot out of me to write an episode. It takes 3-4 hours to write an episode if I do it all in one session. The will to write two episodes a day is there, but the brain is spongy and weak. I might give myself a break before writing Episode #26.
26 episodes! I know! I didn’t think it would have gone on this long! I know that I have to start answering some questions that I’ve been putting off, mostly because I don’t know the answers to them. I’m making it all up as I go. It’ll be time to really have a brainstorming session.
Well, that’s my check in. Remember that new episodes of Spell will start tomorrow. Look for it!
I haven’t really talked about this on this blog because I spend most of my day wondering what to say on this thing. Every time I say that I’m going to make an effort to write more in my blog, I wind up pretending it doesn’t exist. It’s hard to upkeep a blog. It’s a lot more fun to just update episodes I write.
Anyway, enough of the excuses /wank. I am participating in what is called Web Serial Writing Month that takes place every August. It’s… just me and another person on Twitter doing it apparently. I’m the only one using the #wesewrimo hashtag frequently and the rest of the people used it a year or two ago, so not even current. The point is that we are making a goal to write so many episodes during this month and feel really good about ourselves for doing so.
I was originally going to shelve ‘Spell’ for a bit and work on this supernatural sitcom idea I’d been working on. I had two episodes plotted out of the six I had titles for. As I got to the third one, I realized that I would much rather work on ‘Spell’! I’ve written four episodes so far this month. I’m averaging one every two-three days. I just finished Episode 23 tonight. As usual, I have no idea what’s going to happen in #24. I haven’t committed to an amount yet. I want to keep it reasonable. Maybe ten? I don’t know. I’ll continue to write them until I don’t, I guess. (Can you tell I have a fear of commitment, yet I crave it so much!)
So, cheer me on as I crank out the writing for your reading pleasure!
Next episode of Spell will be released on August 18th!
I haven’t posted new episodes of Spell in a while because I’m working on adding more to my buffer. They are buffering… I haven’t given up on this project because it’s been very fun (and frustrating) to write! I was blocked for a week or so, but I’ve got a new idea and I’m running with it. As I thought it might, it’s taken a darker turn, but I think it’s going to be good! I’ll start posting new episodes next Tuesday 8/18. Brace yourselves, the magic is real!
