For the last two days, I’ve been brainstorming about “Sundown at the Castle of the Evil Dead”. I realize that I’m getting all kinds of influences from Clue, A Cabin In The Woods, and Betrayal at the House on the Hill. I don’t necessarily want to steal from them, but I do want to tip my hat to them and use what I’ve seen from them to put my own unique spin on it. I wrote a couple ideas down and I think I might have an ending, which is weird for me because I don’t normally know how it’s going to end when I start plotting it. I have a foreseeable twist ending that I’ve never gone for in the previous novellas. It’s okay not to have happy endings, as much as I love them, a good twist ending is never a bad thing. I have somewhat of a beginning; it’s the middle that’s my problem right now.
I had some folks in the #nanowrimo chat room talk to me about the difference between evil dead and zombies. I already did a zombie novella and I don’t want to repeat myself. They said that zombies are driven by hunger while evil dead are just trying to fuck shit up. I can get down with that. No more zombies!
Again, this novella is going to have a gay main character. I need a good lesbian main character in a novella. “The Undead Army of the Black Cauldron” had a lesbian lead, but I still hate it and it will probably never see the light of day, so I need another one. “Sinister Tentacle Sorority” has a female lead, but she’s not a lesbian, so, there’s that.
Okay, I’m rambling and it’s bedtime! I’ll update later!
Hello folks! I finished Sinister Tentacle Sorority on April 12th, which made me very proud! Ever since then, I’ve attended write-ins not knowing what I was going to do next. I sat there and diddled about on Facebook while others wrote. I told myself that it was too soon to start another project and that I needed to let STS breathe before going in to edit it. I put myself in an awkward state of nothingness. I binge watched some Fringe for a while, but I still felt like I was wasting time that could otherwise be used for writing.
On Saturday I met with a friend to do some writing. I took my Grave Robbers From Outer Space cards with me. I spent the night coming up with titles. None of them really grabbed me, so the next day I went back to the cards. It didn’t take me long until I came upon the words “Castle” “Evil” “Dead”. This struck me! Then I drew “Sundown”. This got me excited. I found a title! So it’s going to be “Sundown at the Castle of the Evil Dead”. Someone said that it sounded like a cowboy is involved somehow. It could happen!
I opened a Google Doc and started coming up with some ideas that I’ve seen before in other movies. I get the feeling that this could turn into Haunted House on the Hill or Betrayal at the House on the Hill. This is not necessarily a bad thing. If I could put my little spin on it, it could work out nicely. I might add a little Count of Monte Cristo in this, too.
I don’t have all the pieces together yet, but I’m hoping that this idea sticks because it sounds like a lot of fun.
Let it be known that on Day 12 I finished Sinister Tentacle Sorority! I DUDDITS! It is done. I slapped “The End” on it and I’m free! It probably should have been done on Saturday, but those two naps were really good! I’m so happy! The end was a little sloppy and shaky, but it’s done! I’ll take a look at it next month and do some editing.
What am I going to do now? Well, I would say that I’m going to Disneyland, but I was already there in January for my birthday! I don’t know what I’m going to do for the rest of the month. I still plan to go to write-ins, I just don’t know what I’m going to write.
Is it wise to jump into another project upon the completion of the last one? I’ve got to stay busy somehow!
This weekend has been really rough on the words front. I didn’t have a lot of time to work on STS because I had a date, met a friend for a coffee date, had to get my measurements done for my new diet, go grocery shopping for food for said diet, ate lunch/dinner and then took a nap. I wrote a thousand words a day. It was pretty pitiful. The words are dren, but they’re words. I even highlighted a section of words that are to be destroyed with extreme prejudice when it comes to edit.
The good news is that I finished Chapter 8! It was the hardest chapter to write. I couldn’t focus on it this weekend. I couldn’t concentrate! Chapter 9 will be the last chapter! I’m at 31,848 words, just over 3k away from hitting my 35k word goal! I wasn’t expecting to be almost done by now. Why must I always be an overachiever? It’s in my blood I guess, that and cholesterol!
Tomorrow starts the beginning of the end for Sinister Tentacle Sorority! Wish me luck!
Well, I waited much too late to start writing after watching some Fringe. I was totally unfocused and the 484 words I wrote tonight were complete and utter shit. I had no idea what was happening since I had deviated from the outline at the end of the previous chapter. I ran into some unforeseen consequences and now I have to reframe what I’m doing on the fly. I just don’t have the energy to do it tonight. So, I will not be finishing STS tomorrow. Maybe Sunday if things go well tomorrow night. I have a date tomorrow, so I won’t have much time to work on it. 😛
Well, it’s Day 7 and I finished Chapters 6 & 7, culminating in 4,665 words written today! That puts me at 27,966 words in total. I may lose some words because I stupidly made hairspray two words, but I’ll fix that in editing!
The chapters are starting to get shorter as the story builds! This pleases me muchly. I don’t like long chapters because there are so few chances to take a break and set it down. When you commit to reading until the end of the chapter and you flip ahead and see that there’s still another 15 pages of it left, it’s frustrating and it makes reading a chore. Reading for fun should not be a chore! That is something I want to avoid. So, again, editing, maybe rewriting.
I surpassed my original goal of 25k tonight. I can’t believe that this story isn’t done yet. I must be very verbose. I’m closing in on my new goal of 35k. I think it’s actually going to end up being 40k, but I’m not going to change the goal because what if it ends before 40? Then I’m a failure and overestimated the amount of words I was going to get. It’s better to aim low and exceed the expectations and look like a winner!
I have two chapters left: Chapter 8 & 9. The ending is going to be awesome! I can’t wait to write it. I think that this story might have 10k left and at the rate I’m going, I might be done on Saturday! Then I’ll have the rest of the month off! Oh, but a writers’ work is never done, is it? I might poke at the previous Plan X novellas for the remainder of the month. I think I’m ready for beta readers! We’ll see!
I’m going to bed now. It’s past my bedtime!
Thanks for reading!
Here I am at Day 6 of Camp Nanowrimo and I must say that I’m doing better than expected. I love writing Sinister Tentacle Sorority! It’s been a blast! One of my main concerns are that the rising action doesn’t happen until the end of Chapter 3. The first two chapters is world building and character building, which I guess is okay, but it feels to me to be a slice of life of the sorority girls. It could be argued that this is necessary to see what their life is like before hell tears it all apart.
The second main concern is that my chapters are too long. I’m averaging 4-5k per chapter. I feel it’s too much, but there’s essential stuff that happens in those chapters. I’m going to have a hard time editing this.
At the end of Day 6 I have 23,301 words! I had a great opening weekend. I took Friday off from work and devoted most of the day to writing, that is when I wasn’t napping! I took more naps on Saturday and Sunday. They were glorious!
My first word count goal was 25k. As I approached 15k, I realized that 25k wasn’t going to cut it, so I upped it to 35k. Now that I’m nearing 25k, I don’t think 35k is going to do it either. This novella might be around 40-45k, making it the longest Plan X novella yet!
The time is drawing near! It’s the night before Camp Nano! I’m so excited to get started on Sinister Tentacle Sorority. There’s no way this story will tank! Well, I shouldn’t jinx myself, but I haven’t been this excited since Monster Night at the Carnival From Mars! I wasn’t as excited for Zombie Hospital of the Damned, Part III because I knew it would be a huge undertaking… and it was. STS is going to be so good! It deserves a space in the Grave Robbers pantheon.
I’ve still been debating whether I should change the series name from Grave Robbers to something else. I don’t want to get sued for copyright infringement by the game company for lifting their game title. Thought they lifted the name directly from a movie, so they’re not getting sued. If anything, it’s an homage to the game since I’m using their game to create these stories.
I’ve been throwing the name Plan 9 (from Outer Space) around in my head. It’s still from the same movie because it’s the alternate title of Grave Robbers From Outer Space. I’ve also thought about Plan X. As you know X is the Roman numeral for 10, and it’s the first letter of my name, so it has that going for it. The more I think about it, the more I begin to like it. I think I’ll go with Plan X. Yeah, why not? Plan X.
Tomorrow I break ground on STS. I took tomorrow off so that I can devote the time to writing as much as I can. I hope to get 5k done by the end of the day. I’m shooting for 25k for this story. Monster Night was 25k, Zombie Hospital was 35k, and the one that shall not be named was also 35k.
